When you are younger, you have a certain idea of what a relationship is supposed to be. You envision this perfect person who will somehow make you perpetually happy. Time definitely changes things.
When you finally meet the person you are meant for, love takes on a brand new meaning. It’s about compatibility. It’s about support and comfort. It’s about loving each other enough to tell one another when one of you is acting like an ass. It’s about motivating one another. It’s about making room in your future for more than just you. It’s about addressing the problems head on and working together to overcome the obstacles. It is about creating a partnership.
I have been in so many relationships that have crumbled, and what has been even harder, is watching the relationships of my loved ones crumble because of one thing and one thing only. Lies. Lying to yourself that things are good when they aren’t. Lying to your partner, by not telling them that your feelings have changed or telling them you are fine when you are not. We lie because we are scared. Mostly scared of being alone. I know this because I did it for years.
Now, I have a man who I cannot lie to. I look at him and I have to tell him everything in my heart. I see him and I know that even when everything around me feels wrong, together we can make it ok. We hit walls. We get frustrated. There are even times when we will take it out on one another. But we recognize it and we address it. Basically, I’ve never been more happy to be told I’m being a jerk.
I think that is love…
